I was mainly a drummer until developing hearing changes in 2023 and shea on air emerged when I left the band scene to protect my ears long term and grappled with how to make music alone. I started playing classical flute when I was 8 years old but hadn't played much since high school. It's the only other instrument I play, so when I stopped drumming it became central.

This project's sound is defined by the fusion and inherent constraints of these opposing sensibilities, and an equal appreciation for both ambient and pop music. I record and produce the whole thing in my studio apartment with my 1958 Haynes flute, one mic, a 2-octave synth, and Ableton.

My vision for shea on air is to stretch the narrow mainstream connotations of the flute (whimsical, precise, diminutive, feminine, new age) through distortion, humor, and purposeful de-skilling – classical sound processed through an unfettered, embodied, DIY spirit forged by years drumming.
